You may be ready (and super excited!) to start applying for your first hairstyling position, but is your resume? Now is the time to spruce it up so you can step into your creative career! Here are our tips for building your hairstyling resume so you can be confident applying at salons and score some interviews:

ENSURE ALL YOUR INFORMATION IS UP-TO-DATE

This should be a no-brainer! Review your resume and ensure all your information is updated — this includes your education, experience, and personal info like email address and phone number. You don’t want to risk missing a callback because of an old phone number!

INCLUDE ANY RELEVANT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Now that you’re entering your creative career, your resume should reflect that! Make sure to include your hairstyling education — with your graduation date and the name of the school — and any previous industry experience you may already have. Keep in mind too, while it may be useful to include your high school diploma, the award you won in grade nine probably isn’t relevant to your hairstyling career now. Showcase the best, and leave out the rest!

INCLUDE YOUR INSTAGRAM HANDLE

Your Instagram page is essentially your digital portfolio, so show it off! Your resume can only communicate so much about your skills and technique, especially in a creative and visual field. Including your Instagram handle invites a potential employer to actually see what you can do, so make sure your page looks professional and features your best work. 

TALK ABOUT WHY YOU WANT TO WORK AT THIS PARTICULAR SALON

Show them you’ve done your homework and are passionate about working at this particular salon by tailoring your resume to what they’re looking for. Do you believe in their stance on being environmentally-friendly? Do you admire their approach to guest experience? Tell them! It will make their decision that much easier if they can tell you’ll fit in with the team.

KEEP IT SHORT, SWEET, AND NEAT

Stylists’ days are super busy — they don’t have time to sit down and read tons of resumes! Keep your resume to one page, and only include the most important and relevant info for the position. Don’t go crazy with the colours or layout either. Your resume is meant to showcase your info, so make sure your design isn’t distracting from the important stuff.
