How to Prepare for Your Interview at a Salon

A woman in a polka-dot button down shirt sits at a computer, smiling.

So you’ve scored an interview at your first salon — congratulations! Now what? Here are four tips we have to ensure you’re well-prepared to ace your interview and get that job:

DRESS THE PART

Right from the start, you want to show them you’re going to take the job seriously. You only get one chance at a first impression, so go the extra mile and dress to impress. Pull together your best all-black look, and dress one level above their staff dress code. Their stylists wear business casual? Dress like you mean business.

STYLE YOUR HAIR

You’re applying for a hairstyling position, so make sure your hair reflects the high quality of your work. This is a direct and early opportunity to show off your skills and how important this opportunity is to you.

ENSURE YOUR INSTAGRAM (OR ONLINE PORTFOLIO) IS UP TO DATE

As a modern-day hairstylist, your Instagram page doubles as your portfolio. Your social media is the best place to visually show off your work, and there’s a high chance your interviewer will be checking your profile. Make sure you have an updated bio and current photos, and archive any old work that you wouldn’t want a future employer seeing.

RESEARCH THE SALON YOU’RE INTERVIEWING AT

It’s important to know some background info on the salon you’re applying for. Not only does this help you decide if the salon is really a good fit for you, but it will also help you answer the “Why do you want to work with us?” question. Does their work appeal to you? Do you love their environmental ethos? Do they get involved in the local community? Knowing your “why” in an interview is important!

With all of these under your belt, you’ll be sure to ace that interview! Still need some extra help? That’s why we offer resume and portfolio-building classes to all our students.
