How To Become A Professional Barber
So you love the look of a fresh fade and a crisp beard, and maybe you’ve even tried cutting a friend’s hair - now what? If you find yourself wondering how to turn this interest into a fulfilling career, there’s a few simple steps you can take to make that dream a reality.
1. Go To Hair School
You can’t work as a barber (or hairstylist) in Canada without the appropriate training - so the first step is to attend hair school! Our student kit provides a premium Wahl clipper and trimmer set, a straight razor, a full-size iPad, and all the professional tools you’ll need in your career as a barber. We provide several additional workshops at no extra cost to ensure that your education is well-rounded - photography, social media, and business skills (to name a few) that will all help you launch your career!
2. Start Your Apprenticeship
After only 3 months in school, you’re eligible to start your apprenticeship! With our 4 day school schedule, it’s much easier to get a job and many of our students get hired before they graduate. Research salons and barbershops in the city, and find one that matches your values - opportunities for growth, mentorship and a great company culture are all good things to look for. The right mentor and support system can make a huge difference when you’re starting your career, and we’re happy to help you find the right fit!
3. Get Licensed
Once you’ve completed 1600 hours (about 1-2 years) of apprenticeship, you can take an exam through Apprenticeship Manitoba and become a Red Seal Certified hairdresser. This certification is valid anywhere in Canada, and the sky is the limit - you can open your own barbershop, mentor new talent, become a creative director, work in film and TV, and much more!
